Charles X Gustav, (born Nov. 8, 1622, Nyköping Castle, Sweden—died Feb. 13, 1660, Gothenburg), king of Sweden who conducted the First Northern War (1655-60) against a coalition eventually embracing Poland, Russia, Brandenburg, the Netherlands, and Denmark.His aim was to establish a unified northern state. In 1642 Charles, the son of John Casimir and Charles IX's eldest daughter.
